Sliced Potatoes In Air Fryer

I have always had a thing for sliced potatoes. Many years ago, when Dominic and I first set up home together, I used to replace aubergine in a moussaka with sliced potatoes.

This is because aubergines were too expensive, and I could get some cheap potatoes and use them instead. Plus, Dominic, like most blokes would choose potatoes over aubergine, so he was happy!

I also loved to decorate the top of a casserole with some yummy, sliced potatoes and it made the casserole even more special. If you follow a gluten free diet you can use it as a replacement of pasta in lasagne recipes.

Whenever you have a recipe for a casserole, imagine follow this recipe today for air fryer sliced potatoes and taking your casserole to the next level.

So when I read online that you can not make a slow cooker Lancashire hotpot, I was like….have they not heard of an air fryer for making those sliced potatoes all crispy?

I cooked the slow cooker Lancashire hotpot and loaded my favourite potato slices into the air fryer and then placed them on top.

Edit: Before I get a zillion emails and comments asking what a Lancashire hotpot is, you can read about it here, but basically it is a lamb stew from northern England topped with sliced potatoes.

Then I was in the middle of prepping the slow cooker, when I got an email from a subscriber for a recipe for air fried sliced potatoes and thought there would be nothing better, than to take the behind the scenes picture as I made Lancashire hotpot and share it with you.

And that is what this air fryer recipe is all about. Showing you how to make the best ever air fryer potato slices that you can eat however you like, especially over casseroles, stews etc.

Can You Air Fry Sliced Potatoes?

Yes you can! The air fryer is fantastic for sliced potatoes and one of the first air fryer recipes I did, and one I cook regularly.

You can make really thin sliced potatoes for making potato crisps with or you can keep it at a medium thickness to serve over casseroles like we do.

Crispy Potato Slices In Air Fryer

If you would like your potato slices extra crispy, then I recommend adding in more extra virgin olive oil in a spray, close to the end of cooking. This will give it an extra crisp and make them super crispy.

I tend to keep an extra virgin olive oil spray in my pantry and then use it for recipes like these air fryer sliced potatoes.

Notes

Crispy. If you would like more crisp on your sliced potatoes, then I recommend you add a little spray of extra virgin olive oil 3 minutes before the end of the cook time.

Quantities. Avoid filling the air fryer past the ¾ mark. As the potatoes will stick together and you wont have a wonderful crisp on the potatoes.

FAQs

Why soak potatoes in water before air frying? ›

Soaking the potatoes after they're cut draws out some of the starch which is naturally present in potatoes. This will result in a crispier fry. A thirty minute soak in cold water does the trick but you may soak them longer if you want.

Why are my potatoes still hard in air fryer? ›

Not preheating the air fryer

Air fryers might not serve quite the same function as a traditional oven, but they have a fair amount of crossover in how they operate. For instance, preheating your air fryer much the same way you'd preheat your oven might be the secret to ensuring a crispy, savory potato.

How long does it take a potato to cook in an air fryer? ›

Spray each potato with a few spritzes of oil and season with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Arrange in the basket, and air fry 400F until a knife can easily be inserted into the center of each potato, about 35 to 40 minutes, turning halfway through cooking time.

What kind of potatoes are best for air fryer? ›

Use Yukon gold or Russet potatoes for the best texture. These two types of potatoes hold their shape well but become tender inside. These dense potatoes do not become mushy or soggy. These starchy and waxy potatoes are perfect for making air fryer potatoes.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes before frying? ›

Soaking potatoes in water helps remove excess starch. Excess starch can inhibit the potatoes from cooking evenly as well as creating a gummy or sticky texture on the outside of your potatoes. Cold water is used because hot water would react with the starch activating it, making it harder to separate from the potatoes.

Do you add salt before or after air fryer? ›

As a good practice, toss your food with oil, salt, herbs, and spices in a bowl first before adding to the air fryer.

How do you know when potatoes are done in an air fryer? ›

Cook in the Air Fryer on 400 degrees for about 40 to 50 minutes, until fork tender. (Note: I used tongs to rotate mine after about 25 minutes, as they were getting pretty brown on top.)

Can you put tin foil in an air fryer? ›

The great news about air fryers is that you can use foil along with parchment paper to cook your food in an air fryer. Just remember that if it's safe and effective to use in a conventional oven, it will work just fine in an air fryer.

Why are things not getting crispy in the air fryer? ›

Dry the outside of the food properly before you add oil. Do not use too much oil, as this will make the food less crispy and more fattening. Meat or poultry can be lightly brushed with oil or marinated to get the crispiest results.

Can you put a raw potato in the air fryer? ›

Step 1In a large bowl, toss potatoes with oil, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and Cajun seasoning, if using. Season with salt and pepper. Step 2Place potatoes in basket of air fryer and cook at 400° for 10 minutes.

Is it better to bake or air fry a potato? ›

I also noticed that the skin stayed crisp longer than the oven-baked potato. Fluffier interior: The interior of the air fryer baked potato was fluffier and lighter. The interior of the oven-baked potato seems to maintain more moisture, making it feel heavier and not as fluffy.

Should I microwave my potato before air frying? ›

The size of the potato and model of airfryer may effect the cooking time. To speed up the cooking time, you can microwave on high for 8-10 mins before airfrying (check after 15-20 mins). When ready, the skin should be crisp and the inside tender and fluffy. Split and serve immediately with the toppings of your choice.

Are air fried potatoes better than french fries? ›

Air frying potatoes is considered to be a healthier alternative to deep frying, as it uses less oil and reduces the amount of fat in the dish. Air frying can produce crispy potatoes with similar texture and taste as deep frying, but with fewer calories and less unhealthy fats.

Can I put parchment paper in the air fryer? ›

With holes to help the hot air circulate and cook your food to perfection, our air fryer liners suit the job perfectly. Parchment paper can handle the heat inside your air fryer - up to 428°F (220°C). To get the best results, add the parchment paper to the air fryer basket at the same time as you add your ingredients.

Can you put potatoes on top of each other in air fryer? ›

How long should I soak potatoes before frying? ›

Place them in a large bowl and cover with cold water. Allow them to soak, 2 to 3 hours. (You can also stick them in the fridge and let them soak overnight.) When you're ready to make the fries, drain off the water and lay the potatoes on 2 baking sheets lined with paper towels.

Should I rinse my potatoes before air frying? ›

Rinse and dry them and them into 1/2 inches pieces (see the section above on how to cut the perfect fry). Coat the potatoes. Then add them to a large bowl along with the rest of the ingredients and mix well to combine, making sure to coat each fry with the oil, salt, and pepper.

Why are my fries not crispy in the air fryer? ›

It's essential that you spread the potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket and that you leave a little space between each one. If they're too crowded, the potatoes will steam inside the air fryer, and they won't get crispy. In order to give them adequate space, you'll likely need to work in batches.
