A man suspected of killing an 18-year-old woman in Rancho Cordova was shot by police in Elk Grove after a vehicle chase on Highway 99 on Wednesday, authorities said. The woman was found dead outside of a home in the 3000 block of Ramsgate Way at 1:15 p.m., the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said. The coroner identified her on Friday as Saraiah Acosta. The sheriff's office said that they responded to a caller who said that a man had stabbed the woman and run her over with a vehicle. Officers found the woman with multiple stab wounds. Hours later, detectives identified a suspect and found him in Elk Grove, according to Amar Gandhi, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office. Sgt. Jason Jimenez, a spokesperson for the Elk Grove Police Department, said they learned around 4:40 p.m. that the California Highway Patrol was chasing a homicide suspect going southbound on Highway 99. Elk Grove officers joined CHP once the driver exited at Cosumnes River Boulevard and started going southbound on Bruceville Road. Jimenez said police caught up to him after he rear-ended another vehicle that was stopped at a red light.Elk Grove police said three of their officers fired their weapons at the suspect, but it is unclear how many times the suspect was hit. It is also unclear why those officers shot at the suspect. Police also said that a firearm was found in his car, but they determined that it was a replica.Elk Grove police said they are reviewing body camera footage. They also said that both their professional standards bureau and the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office are conducting separate, independent reviews of the shooting.The wounded suspect was taken to the hospital, according to Elk Grove police. His condition is still unknown. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect in custody as 22-year-old Devian Lewis. The sheriff's office also said that Lewis and the 18-year-old woman had been in an on-again, off-again relationship for the last two years.According to a release from the Elk Grove Police Department, their investigation bureau is taking the lead and that is standard practice for any officer-involved shooting. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office and the Elk Grove Police Department's Professional Standards Bureau will also be reviewing the circ*mstances surrounding the shooting, according to the release. Friends and family of the victim at the scene did not want to speak about the incident.The Folsom Cordova Unified School District said that she was a former student in the district. Officials will make mental health specialists available for students. "Our hearts go out to the victim's family and friends," the district said.
