What ingredients are in dog amoxicillin? ›

Each 250-mg tablet contains amoxicillin trihydrate equivalent to 200 mg of amoxicillin activity and 50 mg of clavulanic acid as the potassium salt. For use in dogs only. Each 375-mg tablet contains amoxicillin trihydrate equivalent to 300 mg of amoxicillin activity and 75 mg of clavulanic acid as the potassium salt.

Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic used in dogs to treat many different types of bacterial infections, including skin infections, urinary tract infections (UTI), respiratory tract infections, abscesses, skin wounds, ear infections and digestive tract infections.

Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid comes in a tablet and liquid suspension form. Tablets and suspension are given orally (by mouth). If using the liquid form, shake well before measuring the dose and measure the dose carefully. This medication should be given to your pet with food.

Amoxicillin is given by mouth in the form of a tablet, capsule, or liquid suspension. It can be given with or without food, however, if vomiting occurs when dosed on an empty stomach, give future doses with food. Give the medication for the entire prescribed duration unless otherwise directed.

Vomiting is the most likely effect with an overdose, but large overdoses of amoxicillin/clavulanate can be serious and can cause damage to the nervous system and liver. If you witness or suspect an overdose, immediately contact your veterinarian or an animal poison control center for further advice.

Don't crush pills or open capsules unless your veterinary team says it's OK. That includes “delayed release” and coated and long-acting medications. Crushing can cause unwanted side effects and/or cause the medication to not work or make the taste even worse. Use pet food as a delivery method.

Some human antibiotics can be given safely to dogs.
