Throwing A Bluey Themed Birthday Party

My son is obsessed with Bluey! It's a rather "cheeky" kids show that I admittingly love too! It's a lighthearted cartoon about a dog family and how they entertain themselves every day. The daughter is named Bluey hence the name of the show.

So when my Lucas asked me to throw him a Bluey party at home, I was thrilled! I love throwing house parties. My main focus is usually the FOOD when I entertaining but since it's a kids birthday, the decorations need to be planned accordingly.

And because I like to keep things simple, I purchased everything from Amazon 1-2 weeks prior to the party. Read more below!

Bluey Decorations

The Balloons

Balloon have come a long way since when we were kids. Now-a-days, there are all KINDS of balloon decorations. Balloon arches being the go-to centerpiece so I knew I wanted to go that route. Mainly because balloons are inexpensive!

We were actually in the process of building a pool that time of year, so the only outdoor area to have a kids birthday party was in our DRIVEWAY. (We moms have to improvise right?!)

If you plan on blowing up a lot of balloons, THIS machine is a MUST!!

And being in sunny Florida, it's typically hot and rainy so we put up a tent and opened the garage to allow for some shade.

The TENT is where I decided to put the balloons. I did not have any place to hang the balloons so I turned my balloon ARCH into balloon PILLARS instead. One on each side of the tent.

I bought the balloons off of Amazon! They are Bluey colors in all different sizes. AND they came with a few pay print balloons to match the Bluey party theme!

HEREis the balloon arch I purchased!

HERE are the Bluey and Bingo balloons I purchased!

I also bought these blue and yellow tubs from Michaels for $5 each. They hold ice and have handles making it easy to move, perfect for drinks!

Lastly, we needed fun themed tablecloths so I purchased a few Bluey ones off of Amazon too! They were also inexpensive.

HERE are the tablecloths I purchased!

I was pleasantly surprised at ALL the different Bluey decorations they offer on Amazon and Etsy! It's pretty amazing. You can find more decorations on Amazon and on Etsy!

The Activities

Painting Bluey

All kids parties need some sort of activity. I was a bit limited having minimal space so I KNEW I needed something that the kids could do sitting down.

First, who doesn't love bubbles?! I bought packs of these from Target's $5 section this summer. It's cheap and fun, perfect for outdoor kids parties!

Next, I wanted an activity that the kiddos could do SITTING DOWN.

So I found THESE!!

Bluey Birthday Party Ideas (6)

They were the more costly part of the party but I figured it was a good purchase since it will keep the kids busy AND they can take them home as a party favor!

They are little ceramic Bluey character figurines. Each package comes with the paints and brushes so it's all set!

You can find the Bluey figurines HERE and Bluey Window Art Suncatchers HERE!

Pass The Parcel

This activity is FROM Bluey. At a friends birthday party, Bluey and her sister Bingo, sat in a circle with other friends and a gift that is wrapped multiple times is passed around. When the music stops, the person who is holding the gift (or parcel) gets to unwrap it. If there's still wrapping paper underneath, they keep passing.

You can watch that brief episode BELOW!

Keepy Uppy

This game is a Bluey classic! AND it's CHEAP! Just blow up a balloon and tell the kids to KEEP IT UP! See that episode below.

You can split the groups into two and have a prize for whichever group cna keep it up the longest!

Bluey & Bingo Masks

Print these Bluey & Bingo masks out on thicker cardstock paper and set them out on the kids table. When they arrive, they can cut out their mask and wear them the entire party!

It's very inexpensive and fun! Plus, it turns into a prop and a party favor!

Bluey Activity Table

These Bluey activities are straight from the show! Print them out in color and choose one or multiple activities for the kids to do. Depending upon their ages, they can do the activity themselves or you can guide them through it before you serve the cake!

And don't forget coloring! Toddlers AND bigger kids LOVE to color and it's easy for everyone. Print a stack of these coloring sheets and set them up on a coloring table with lots of crayons!

Party Food

I wanted to keep both the kids and adults in mind when planning the food menu. I dislike when there's JUST pizza at kids parties because it doesn't suit the needs of those who may be gluten free to dairy free options.

So here was my menu:

  • Chicken Ceasar salad- always a hit and easy to make in large batches. I used large aluminum tins from the dollar store to serve it in and plastic tongs! I grilled the chicken myself and made the dressing but you can buy it too! I made my own croutons which are 100% worth it, trust me. Here is my Kale Caesar salad if you want the recipe!
  • Pizza- I ordered a plain pie with cheese and a tomato pie. The tomato pie is great for dairy free folks. Plus, it's easy and kid-friendly.
  • Garlic Knots- I ordered these with the pizza from a local pizza place. Who doesn't love garlic bread soaked in butter?!
  • Hot dogs- I have this amazing hot dog warmer that allows you to cook the hot dogs while steaming the buns all at once. Up to 20!!! So that was definitely going on our table!
  • Homemade popcorn- My father-in-law purchased me a popcorn maker a few years back that I couldn't wait to pull out. It's a fun piece to put out as it looks nice and allows everyone to help themselves to some fresh popcorn. Plus it smells amazing!
  • Fruit- I cut up fresh watermelon and pineapple slices. I think it's much more appetizing then those overdone fruit platters you can buy from the stores They barely get touched so why waste the money?
  • Chips- I placed an assortment of bagged chips in a container for the kids to grab. I love the mini bags as opposed to a big ol' germy bowl of chips.

Consider setting up a pasta bar!

Bluey Cake

I decided to make a Bluey cake! Let's preface this with me saying that I am NOT a baker. It was the first cake like this I made and although it was not perfec, I was happy with how it turned out.

It was actually much easier than I thought it would be since it was a ONE-TIER cake using a regular old baking pan and a box of store-bought mix. (I like Betty Crocker's Yellow Cake Mix!)

Once you bake that, cool it. Then use a package of storebought cream cheese frosting and smear it all over. You might need two containers for frosting.

Now, we will make Bluey! 🙂

First, print THIS PHOTO of Bluey off of your computer. Colored ink isn't necessary but it helps.

Then take a piece of parchment paper and place it over top. Add black icing to a small piping bag with a small round tip and "TRACE" Bluey onto the wax paper. (All items are linked below!)

Then freeze the parchment paper on a baking sheet for 10 minutes or so to allow it to harden.

Then, pull it out and place the parchment paper upside down directly onto the center of the frosted cake.

Gently pull off paper! You should see the black outline of the Bluey transfer on the cake.

It will not be a perfect transfer but that's OK! You can fill in the gaps with more black icing.

Then comes the tedious part of matching the colors. I do not have an exact recipe for each Bluey color so play around until you get the colors similar to the photo.

The EIGHTcolors you want are:

  • light blue
  • lighter blue
  • gray blue
  • yellow
  • redish
  • dark gray
  • tan
  • white- (for the background)

So I bought a large batch of premade white icing and I simply added food coloring to those tubs until I got the color I wanted.

I ran out and actually ended up making my own which is easy to do using butter, powdered sugar, vanilla and milk.

Next, fill EIGHT piping bags, one with each color. The piping tip you will need is a star tip.

Here are the piping bags and tips I used:

Then, start piping mini stars ONE AT A TIME. Use the colored Bluey picture linked above.

TIP! Do ALL of this a day in advance including adding the colored icing to all the piping bags. Then, when you have time the day before the party or the morning of, start piping away. Adding the piping bags to the fridge will make the stars much more sharp looking.

Bluey Music

Don't forget the Bluey soundtrack! Bluey has so many fun songs and instrumentals the kiddos will love dancing to!

Here is a 4 hour video you can play throughout the party in the background to fit the theme!

Here comes the Grannys and the Bluey theme song are popular with my boys!

You don't need to spend a fortune or hours making the perfect themed birthday party for your child. Just plan ahead, let Amazon come to your door, order as much food as you want and focus on 1 or 2 parts of the party.

The items that took the most time to prepare was the balloons and the cake.
