Critics Consensus

Bird Box never quite reaches its intriguing potential, but strong acting and an effectively chilly mood offer intermittently creepy compensation.

Rory L I have no clue why this movie has such a low rating. This movie is great. It's really hard to pull of a Sci-Fi thriller and have it not come off as cheesy but this movie pulls it off super well. The plot is strong, the directing is great, the actors are great as well. It's a great watch if you're into strange plots like these. The conflicts perfectly set up the entire rest of the movie.I recommend this movie a lot! Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Millie R Uh, yeah, no. This was like.. really bad. I kept watching thinking "Oh maybe the interesting stuff is a bit later on" but no. The ending was super mediocre too. By the 30 minute mark I wanted to click off but kept watching just in case. Yeah that was a mistake. The one star is for the one thing they did right - I felt super creeped out, not necessarily scared but just off. They conveyed that feeling super well. Sadly, that did not carry this really disappointing film. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Nicholas L An absolute cinematic masterpiece. Sandra bullock absolutely delivers in this film. I thought it was some of her best work. 10/10 Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/28/24 Full Review Audience Member Yeah, okay, good........ I think6,8/10 Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/28/24 Full Review Scott A Would have been better without the subpar acting. MGK? Seriously? Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review TI H Someone once watched a stinkeroo M. Knight Shyamalan movie called the HAPPENING—which MAD Magazine might have rightfully parodied as “the CRAPPENING”—and decided that even taking a bowel movement on a typewriter would produce a better script than that movie had. BIRD BOX is that someone's steaming pile of poo. It’s better than M. Knight, worse than JJ. The Bird Box is A Quiet Place except even more boring. This time, you have to keep your eyes shut. (Hey, they should make a move where the characters have to be quiet and aren't allowed to look at anything and aren't allowed to smell anything or touch anything.) ///// Most of Bird Box is a survival picture, although the protagonist does have to come to terms with whether she wants to be a mother. Secretly, I cared more about why the monster(s) were on Earth, but that’s just me. ///// The ending of the movie was cute, but it didn’t leave me satisfied. I did not see a resolution to the horror, and so, if the monsters were simply there to be a catalyst for the protagonist’s maternal conflicts, we should have spent more time on her, not on the spooky wind and bright daylight.
